The Seekoei Estuary Mouth Remains Open, For Now

January Feedback 2024

The open Seekoei Estuary mouth

The Seekoei Estuary mouth was very well received by the holidaymakers who seemed to have enjoyed the open river mouth and beach area. Moving part of the parking area combined with the heavy winter rains, seems to have helped keep the mouth open. This was our saving grace as the river on the land side of the causeway is very silted up and shallow with hardly any fresh water flowing in. The evaporation rates are high at this time of year usually resulting in very little water in the Estuary over the summer months.

We are very happy that the mouth stayed open. The channels are still deep so the mouth should stay open deep into the summer.

The 2 Rivers Feeding the Seekoei Estuary

The Swartrivier

We have noticed green algae on the Swartrivier river again and have notified the relevant parties. Water testing has taken place. We await the results.

The Seekoei River

The Seekoei River is not flowing into the Seekoei Estuary at this moment. The Kwanonzame/Humansdorp Waste Water Treatment Works is still not close to operational. Notice has again been given that the upgrades would be starting now. We will continue to monitor this process.

You can read about the state of the Kwanonzame Waste Water Treatment Works here.

The Revised Seekoei Management and Coastal Maintenance Management Plan

The Revised Seekoei Management Plan and Coastal Maintenance Management Plans are in progress. We expect the draft plans to be made available in February.
