The Kwanomzamo Humansdorp Wastewater Treatment Works and the Seekoei Estuary

The Kwanomzamo Humansdorp Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) visit was eye-opening. Unfortunately, we found little in working order. It seems the WWTW has been polluting the environment for some time now. The concern is that the outflow ends up in the Seekoei River that flows down to the Seekoei Estuary.

A tender to improve the Kwanomzamo WWTW was published on the Kouga Municipality site in 2019. To date, contractors have yet to be seen on-site.

Update:

In 2019 KM approved R8.6 million to upgrade the Kwanomzamo Waste Water Treatment Works (below) – Source

Feedback in October 2021 from the desk of the mayor (below) was that the work on the Kwanomzamo Humansdorp Wastewater Treatment Works was complete for R1.6 million less than budgeted for – source.

Water tests are critical to making informed decisions about using the river and Estuary for recreational purposes. We will continue our drive to make these water tests public.

  1. Testing the water won’t solve the problem. Where did the 8.6 million go, and what is the plan of action to fix the Seekoei Estuary?
