We are pleased to witness the return of the flamingos, which indicates an improvement in water quality. Our water tests conducted in May 2023 showed low levels of E. coli. Faecal streptococci levels, on the other hand, remain a concern. We would like to see this lowered to acceptable levels.
Additionally, the water test results for the Jeffreys Bay water treatment facility, where treated water leaves the water treatment works and gets discharged into the environment, have indicated improved readings of E. coli. However, faecal streptococci concentrations remain unacceptably elevated.
Despite their promises to do so at multiple public meetings, water tests conducted by Kouga Municipality are yet to be made publicly available. To ensure transparency and accountability from our local municipality we have launched a Public Access to Information Act application (PAIA) applying for access to these tests. We will continue to invest time and resources in conducting further tests to ensure the community is well-informed about the condition of the Seekoei Estuary.
It is important to note that while there have been improvements at the wastewater treatment works in Jeffreys Bay, it is currently not fully compliant with its water use license, and it has come to our attention that the Kouga Local Municipality does not have a permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs to operate the plant. We are actively monitoring the situation and advocating for a prompt resolution. Furthermore, we share concerns about potential groundwater contamination since the dams don’t seem to be lined and the discharged water not up to standard.
By raising awareness, demanding transparency, and working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders, we can make a positive impact on the health and sustainability of the Seekoei Estuary.
Thank you for your commitment to our shared cause.
Sincerely,
Seekoei Estuary Forum Committee
