Reed expansion at the mouth

Today, we would like to bring your attention to a pressing concern that has emerged from our continued investigations.

Over the past few years, we have observed a significant surge in the growth of reeds in the channel and mouth of the Aston Bay Estuary. Aerial photos have clearly shown a rapid expansion of reeds since 2018. It is essential to acknowledge the vital role reeds and Vlei lands play in nature’s water cleaning process. However, this sudden and substantial growth raises concerns about potential water pollution. It suggests that there may be an increased level of contamination, creating favourable conditions for the reeds to proliferate.

Regrettably, we have not received any water test results or information from the Kouga Municipality regarding this matter. As a result, we took it upon ourselves to conduct water tests in the channel at the end of May 2023. The test results have revealed elevated levels of Faecal Enterococci, indicating a probable sewage pollution issue.

Considering these findings, we raise an important question: When can we expect the implementation of the Environmental Management Plan (EMP), and will the Municipality address all our concerns regarding the pollution of our invaluable natural assets?

Be assured that the Seekoei Estuary Forum remains wholeheartedly committed to advocating for the protection and preservation of our beloved estuary. We will continue to keep you informed about any developments and actions taken to address this urgent matter.

We sincerely appreciate your unwavering support and dedication to our cause.

Warm regards,

The Seekoei Estuary Forum Committee
